Pancakes, Soccer, and Family

It’s just a Tuesday, and I’m snuggling on the couch with my kiddos and Youness. Usually we’re busy cleaning the house or running our weekly grocery errands, but Morocco plays soccer today.

The house has holiday season energy. We love soccer in our family, especially when Morocco is playing. Our game day tradition is to make pancakes. It’s usually Moroccan pancakes but I’ve been on an American pancake kick lately.

In Martha Stewart we trust! I have struggled to make a perfect pancake for years, and even when I found Martha’s Easy Basic Pancake Recipe I still couldn’t get it quite right. Pancakes take the perfect heat and the perfect pan. Also, as Martha says, “The first pancake is often the sacrificial pancake.” I always eat the first as a part of my commitment to being a good mom.

After practicing Martha’s recipe a handful of times, I feel pretty confident about my pancake batch. I was out of milk today, so I substituted three parts sour cream and one part water. If you like a light, airy pancake, I’d recommend it. I might prefer this version over the milk one. My batch was perfect for game day and our tummies are full.

Youness and I finished our meal with Moroccan tea which is a must have for game day. Well, it’s a must have for any day in our home. We love when Baba is off work and we really love when he’s off on game day.

Truthfully, there isn’t anything remarkable about today. Morocco played. The pancakes turned out well. The kids were happy. But sometimes the days that feel most ordinary while you’re living them are the ones you find yourself missing later.

Do you watch soccer, too? I’d love to hear about your favorite sports and game day traditions in the comments.
